Wanderlust

Today was the first day of my newest adventure. For the next couple of weeks I will be on the road with my uncle Finn, working on a moving truck and relocating families from Coast to Coast. As you can see from the photo below, this a popular time of year for people to execute a move. Still, it’s rare to see so many trucks on the same residential block. Then again, it appeared that the particular neighborhood we were working in today, was hit pretty hard by our economic downturn. “For Sale” signs were sprouting up everywhere and the streets seemed even creepier and quieter than I usually find these made-to-order housing communities to be.

After work I hopped over a 4 lane road and a 2 track railway to the nearest health food outlet, Waffle House. My eggs were delicious and after I’d ordered, Keith, my server, went outside to get stoned. The whole restaurant reeked when he came back inside.

My server got stoned after he made my eggs.

Change We Can Believe In

So I’ve been doing my laundry for the past hour. This place across the street requires that I buy a cash card for 2 dollars so that I can use their washers and dryers. No problem, right? No. Except that the laundromat also has 4 computers with Internet access that don’t accept these cards. They only accept quarters. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. How can a washing machine, a glorified bucket, accept a cash card while a computer, arguably the greatest human invention since penicillin, cannot. Literally, there is a cash box attached to the CPU. It looks just like the cash boxes that they attach to the prancing ponies they put outside of Walmart.

Amtrak to Philly…

With My trusty Nikon and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance along for the ride. Isn’t it great how small and insignificant the city looks in the second picture? It’s as if it only exists as we think of it within its own borders. From the other side of the river, it loses a dimension and is little more than a mural painted on a distant building.

Right Up Here is Fine

It feels so good to fall into spanish during the most banal conversations. Just now I heard the cab driver call his dispatcher to see how much a ride from Prospect Heights to Greenpoint would be. When it was the same price he quoted me, I was ecstatic for some reason. It’s probably really cynical to feel overcome with joy when someone doesn’t cheat you, but I was. It felt as though the stars had aligned. I told the driver to stop “en la esquina.” I could walk from here. “Cuanto Sale?” I asked. “Diecisiete,” he said. I gave him three dollars extra and smiled all the way home.

Hell I still Love you New York. That’s why I’m moving back.

If You Like Bright Eyes

You should check out Sarsaparilla. I love the way the songs are built with rich chord structures and spare arrangements. Just right.

Construction Time Lapse at Armani/5th Avenue

This is a video I shot at the new Armani Store over the past couple of months. If you like House Music and Fashion you’ll dig it. If you don’t, you’ll probably still like it. I recommend going to the store with or without money to burn. Mr. Armani’s house is pretty cool even if you can’t afford new underwear.
